Know before you go

Reservations
Each winery sets its own booking rules, and many California wineries recommend or require a reservation, so look them up as you plan.
Tasting fees
Where there's a tasting fee, ask whether buying wine covers it; some wineries waive it.
Getting there
From San Francisco, cross the Bay Bridge, then take Interstate 580 east. From the Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose airports, you can also come by BART or bus.
Best time to visit
Fall is a good time to come: harvest runs from mid-August through November, and temperatures average in the 70s. Summers average in the 90s, with an afternoon breeze off San Francisco Bay.
Getting around
Plan a designated driver or a rideshare, or book a town car or limousine; groups can charter a bus.

Live music and food-and-wine pairings run year-round, and fall adds estate tours, winemaker dinners and seasonal tastings.
