Know before you go

Reservations
The Shawangunk Wine Trail suggests contacting a winery before you visit, since reservations may be required. Its site lists each member's hours, directions and FAQs.
Tasting fees
The trail's tasting passport, offered part of the year, includes one flight at each participating winery and is promoted as a way to save on tastings.
Getting there
By car from Manhattan, New Paltz is about 1 hour 20 minutes and Hudson about 2 hours. Amtrak serves river towns and Metro-North runs into Westchester; Albany, Stewart and Westchester County airports serve the valley.
Best time to visit
September and October, the harvest months, tend to bring lighter rain and often sunny days. Trail events run in spring, summer, fall and the holidays; winters are cold and can be severe.
Getting around
Pick a trail: the Shawangunk Wine Trail (Orange and Ulster counties), the Dutchess Wine Trail (eastern Dutchess County) or the Hudson Berkshire Beverage Trail. Plan a designated driver, a hired driver or a tour.

Seasonal events on the Shawangunk Wine Trail include a spring kickoff, a summer event with wine, cider, music and food, a fall harvest celebration, and holiday tastings and a market.
