Washington on the map

Grapes grown in Washington

Washington grows more than 80 wine grapes, but five of them, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Riesling, make up most of each year's harvest.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon

    Red

A mainstay of the state's harvest, Cabernet Sauvignon is planted most heavily in the Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope and Yakima Valley. It dominates the vineyards of Red Mountain and is a leading grape in the Walla Walla Valley.

  • Merlot

    Red

Merlot grows across the Columbia Valley, with the most vines in the Yakima Valley, Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope. It is also one of the main grapes on Red Mountain and in the Walla Walla Valley.

  • Syrah

    Red

Syrah's largest plantings are in the Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Valley and Wahluke Slope. It is one of the main grapes in the Walla Walla Valley and on Red Mountain, and it is a top grape at Lake Chelan.

  • Chardonnay

    White

Chardonnay is one of Washington's biggest crops. Much of it grows in the cooler parts of the Yakima Valley, and the Horse Heaven Hills and Wahluke Slope also have large plantings.

  • Riesling

    White

Much of Washington's Riesling grows in the cooler parts of the Yakima Valley. It is also the top grape of the Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley, a northerly AVA where white grapes outnumber reds.
